Guilt
by
Roberta Greifer
At the abandoned table
Her black cane leans
Over her chair.
Her white gloves sit idle
The toilet is too clean
After she left for the hospital
I puffed up her pillows
Changed her soiled sheets
Thinking she would return.
Now she hovers over me
At my solitary meals.
Why couldn’t my love
Save her?
In the dark soil
Of my imagination
She asks this question
I can’t answer.
