Dream of My Mother
by
Roberta Greifer
The belongings of my mother are
drifting out to sea.
Overturned tables, sunken chairs,
her dismantled bed.
A pole lamp wobbles on the waves,
and stretches its neck.
Her Kewpie doll searches for its
missing eye.
In a plastic bag a dry toothbrush
waits for her teeth.
Her wheelchair floats by, holding
her white gloves.
I don't find my mother in any of these
objects.
Only my own grief.
